From One Working Mom To Another

I've been through all the stages from infertility to overscheduled to empty nest, and I'm thrilled to nurture a new baby that will help other working moms everywhere.

I'm about to have an empty nest - again - but I'm thrilled at the prospect of new goals in my life that are focused on my dreams separate from my children and family.

When my youngest child went off to college, I decided it was time for me to embark on a new journey to develop an idea I had for an app to help moms more easily find trusted, reliable and affordable child care.

Since launching MomSub, I've learned a ton about being the founder of a tech startup. I just finished an intense four-month program at Founder Institute that helped me put that knowledge into practice to grow MomSub and help even more working mothers eliminate the stress of child care.

I've always been self-motivated and focused on productivity, but as a mother, I stepped it up even more to put as much as I could into my kids and my career. While working part-time as a TV reporter and eventually running two businesses on the side -- while also being a Room Mom, Girl Scout Leader, Soccer Coach and hands-on default parent -- the mental load got overwhelming. I eventually recognized the value of determining priorities, focusing on them and letting go of a lot to maintain balance.

It paid off as I've been building my startup MomSub because I feel the weight of those same demands. Founder Institute forced me to be disciplined to get projects done instead of letting them linger in pursuit of perfection, and it allowed me to recognize which projects had the most impact and value for my business.

Though I completed the Founder Institute accelerator, it's only the beginning as I apply for the next level of the program that guides graduates to obtain funding to grow their venture.

Though I'm excited because more growth means helping more working moms, I sometimes get impatient when the gains are steady but moderate. So I again turn to my experience as a mother.

My kids came back to our home for a few years after college, but this summer they decided on their own to forge their way in the world away from their parent's house. And when I reach my true goal to create a thriving, long-lasting business that will make the world a better place, my new baby, MomSub, will someday take on a life of its own, too.
